Initial Mathematics Placement for Incoming Freshmen

Note: This page only applies to incoming freshmen who are TSI complete in mathematics. Students who are not TSI complete in mathematics should consult with the learning center regarding their mathematics placement.

Upon admission, incoming UNT freshmen are initially given a mathematics placement level based on a combination of their high school class rank and SAT or ACT math scores as described in the tables below. Initial mathematics placements expire after one year. It is therefore very important that all freshmen who have not completed their mathematics requirement take a mathematics course within their first two semesters at UNT.

Students have an opportunity to improve their placement level by taking a mathematics placement exam. In particular, all students planning to major in science, engineering, or mathematics, or planning on obtaining a Bachelor of Science in economics, as well as all students whose degree plan requires Math 1710 (Calculus I) should take the math placement test prior to orientation. For more details about the mathematics placement test go to https://math.unt.edu/academics/mathematics-placement.

For advice on which mathematics course to take, consult your advisor or see our "Which Math Class is Right for You?" page.

The College Board changed the scoring of the SAT in March of 2016. If you took the SAT prior to March 2016, you should look up your score below under the "Old SAT" column. If you took the SAT in March 2016 or later, use the "New SAT" column.
