Many graduate students assume it is enough to be really clever in mathematics to finish a PhD degree. Others think it is sufficient to put in enough years of really hard work. Some assume the path is downhill after reaching ABD, "all-but-dissertation", status. We attempt to debunk these myths in this week's algebra seminar. We will talk about the steps graduate students should take after passing their qualifying PhD exams. How do you find an advisor? How do you decide on a topic? How do you find a PhD problem? What should you be doing besides enrolling in courses? How difficult is it to actually write up completed results for the thesis or for publication?
