William Cherry

Congratulations to Professor William Cherry for winning the 2013 UNT Mathematics Department Faculty Service Award!

Professor Cherry completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Yale University in 1993 under the direction of Serge Lang.

Professor Cherry's research is in the areas of complex analysis and number theory. He is especially interested in connections between rational solutions and functional solutions to systems of algebraic equaions. Professor Cherry has authored or co-authored about 17 articles in his areas of interest and a research monograph on Nevanlinna theory.

Professor Cherry received one of the Honors Professor Awards at Honors Day in 2007 in recognition for his undergraduate teaching, and he has directed two masters projects.

Professor Cherry's service contributions to the department include working with Professor Quintanilla as an undergraduate faculty advisor during a time when the number of math majors graduating each year at UNT nearly doubled from around thirty students per year to around sixty students per year. Professor Cherry also served regularly on the mathematics department's executive, strategic planning, and undergraduate affairs committees and is proud of his contributions to the revisions of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum. Professor Cherry served as the Math Club faculty sponsor for several years. At the university level, Professor Cherry has been active in the University Curriculum Committee and served for three years as its first faculty co-chair. Professor Cherry has also served on the Faculty Senate and on the Oversight Committee for the Core Curriculum. You can read more about some of Professor Cherry's involvement with the Core Curriculum in Inhouse, and some other highlights about Professor Cherry here in Professor Francisco Guzman's presentation to the Faculty Senate.

Professor Cherry is currently serving the Mathematics Department as Associate Department Chair for Course Scheduling and he is looking forward to an upcoming faculty development leave allowing him to spend the summer and fall terms of 2014 at the Vietnamese Institute for the Advanced Study of Mathematics as a Senior Researcher participating in a semester-long program researching Value Distribution Theory and related topics.
