The statue of King Edward VI (1537-1553) at the entrance (see next photo). He became king in 1547 at the age of nine, upon the death of his father King Henry VIII. He reigned for only six years. He reestablished the St. Thomas Hospital in 1552, after a period of dormancy. The hospital had been disbanded by Henry VIII in 1540 because of its reputation as a "bawdy house" gained by its acceptance of unsavory women.
