Adorning the walls of The Great Hall are twelve beautiful murals painted by Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) which portray the history of the area, starting with Roman occupation and ending with John Dalton. [The paintings are: "The Romans Building a fort of Mancenion"; "The Baptism of Edwin"; "Expulsion of the Danes from Manchester c 910"; "The Establishment of Flemish Weavers in Manchester 1363"; "The Trial of Wycliff 1377"; "The Proclamation Regarding Weights and Measures 1556"; "Crabtree Watching the Transit of Venus 1639"; "Chetham's Life Dream 1640"; "Bradshaw's Defence of Manchester 1642"; "John Kay Inventor of the Fly Shuttle"; "The Opening of the Bridgewater Canal 1761"; "Dalton Collecting Marsh-Fire gas."] The painting in the far corner is the Dalton painting (see next photo).
