An important event in the history of Manchester was "The Establishment of Flemish Weavers in Manchester 1363."
This was the foundation of the textile industry in Manchester. Soon Manchester became a center for woolen and linen goods, and later the center for cotton goods . In this painting, Phillipa, Queen of Edward III, who brought in the Flemish weavers, is being shown a piece of cloth while seated on her horse (left), while the weavers look on with anticipation (right).
