The Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, which was founded in 1781, established its permanent quarters at 36 George Street 1799-1940. The building was bombed during a German air raid in December 1940 and virtually all records, manuscripts, documents, apparatus, equipment, and furniture were destroyed. Today the modern building is Devonshire House, used for University functions. Note the blue plaque. See next two photos.
