Appearance of the Royal Academy, pre-1786. This building was originally a Tudor mansion with a tower, purchased in 1671 (the tower was demolished in 1786). Over the years the building was expanded and the Royal Military Academy Building was established in April 1741. Rooms were prepared for classrooms, residences for instructors, and an equipment storeroom area. The laboratory that William Cruickshank used to prepare strontium salts in 1790 is believed to have been on the first floor, to the left (southwest wing) upon entering. Courtesy, Alan Turner.
