A. J. Balard. 1802-1876, was professor of physics at Montpellier 1837-1841. He discovered bromine ten years before he became professor, in 1826, while an assistant at the university. In 1851 he permanently moved to Paris where he became professor at the College of France {LINK: ParisD529}. This portrait dates from his days in Paris.
