This is a more recent view of the Peter and Paul Fortress from a similar vantage point. After Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703, he commenced construction on the fortress, which was built during the period 1706-1740, originally as a precaution against attack by the Swedish Navy. When Dostoevsky was arrested in 1849, he was imprisoned here. Courtesy, Elena Zhivopistseva.
