Closeup of the plaques. The two nearest are (left and right, respectively) of Nicholas II and his wife. Nicholas II was born Nikolay Alexandrovich Romanov (1868-1918) and was the last emperor of Russia. His wife Alexandra Fedorovna Romanova, (Alix of Hesse) was born Alix Viktoria Helena Luise Beatrice of Hesse and by Rhine (1872-1918). She was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and was a carrier of hemophilia which afflicted the son Alexi. They ruled 1894-1917. Nicholas abdicated in 1917 in an attempt to avoid a bloody revolution, but in vain.
