Tobolsk was the childhood home of Mendeleev. This is a northward winter view of Tobolsk, showing the Kremlin on the hill. The Kremlin of Tobolsk dates from 1683-1686, initially blessed as Uspenski (Assumption). On the far (north) side of the Kremlin is the new city, while on the near (south) side is the old city. The building at the extreme bottom right is the former gymnasium that Mendeleev attended and of which Mendeleev's father was director. Courtesy, Evgenie Ivanovich Promotov, Tobolsk Tourist Agency.
