He was the famous and popular professor of physical chemistry of the University of Leipzig, Germany, and active in research in chemical equilibrium and reaction rates. He founded the Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie. He received the Nobel Prize in 1909 for his studies in physical chemistry. Ostwald studied and worked at the University of Tartu 1872-1881. Ostwald is credited with the introduction of the term "mole" to denote the atomic weight of a substance in grams.
