"Hidden Markov Models with Applications"

ABSTRACT:

Since the introduction of the hidden Markov models (HMM) by Baum and Petrie in 1966, HMM and its related algorithms have become powerful statistical and probabilistic tools for modeling and analyzing sequential data. HMMs have been widely used in many applications such as speech recognition, natural language processing, and bioinformatics. In this talk, we first provide an overview of HMMs by discussing some basic ideas behind HMMs. Then we present the key problems for HMMs and their associated fundamental algorithms: the Forward Algorithm, Viterbi Algorithm, and Forward-Backward Algorithm. Through some practical examples, we illustrate the real-world impact of HMMs, particularly in weather prediction based on observed data.
