Abstract:
We will take a bird's eye view of some topics in algebraic topology. After defining the simplicial homology groups and looking at some examples, we will see how they can be put to work answering topological questions. We will survey several notable results including the theorem on invariance of domain, Brouwer's fixed point theorem, and Euler's formula for polyhedra. If time permits we will outline the singular homology and cohomology theories, and de Rham cohomology.
