Abstract: Are you confused when you run into Tor or Ext (with all of their sub- and superscripts) in a book or paper? In this learning seminar, we will briefly cover the basic ideas of homological algebra (chain complexes, maps, and homotopies; exact sequences; resolutions) and throw in a little category theory, culminating in a discussion of the Tor functor and some applications thereof. A handout with basic definitions, theorems, and suggestions for further reading will accompany the talk.
