Landing a job in the academy requires a great deal of specialized knowledge, a wide ranging skill set and a healthy dose of good luck. In this talk I will focus on those aspects of the process which young scholars can control in hopes that, should opportunity knock, a well prepared student might seize the moment. My remarks will address important differences between Research 1 institutions, large institutions with a student-centered focus, small liberal arts colleges and community colleges. Understanding these differences and how they relate to a young scholar's goals and interests is a crucial step in targeting an optimal career path, constructing a relevant vita and finding a good job. The talk is intended for students at all levels.
