Abstract:

The word "natural" gets thrown around a lot in mathematics. But back in the 1950s, the notion was formalized by Eilenberg and Maclane. They were motivated by a desire to show the Snake Lemma holds in general settings. In this talk, we will clarify the meaning of the word "natural" and its appropriate use. If there is time, we will discuss the interesting categorical implications of the existence of naturality.
