Modern Schubert calculus straddles the fields of algebra, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. In this talk we will learn about the motivating questions of the field of Schubert calculus, e.g. given 4 lines in 3-space, how many other lines intersect all 4? We will see how this question moved from its construction in the 1870s to the modern day study of the cohomology (Chow ring) of certain algebraic varieties and, if time allows, discus a few recent results.
