Continuous actions of $(\mathbb{R},+)$ on $\mathbb{R}$

We motivate and prove a theorem characterizing continuous actions of the Polish group $(\mathbb{R}, +)$ on $\mathbb{R}$. This characterization shows a close relationship between homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}$ with open intervals and continuous actions.
