"Sparse Matrix Factorization and the No-Cancellation Assumption "

ABSTRACT:

When computing the Cholesky factorization of a sparse, symmetric, positive definite matrix, the permutation of the matrix can have a significant impact on the sparsity of the Cholesky factor. A construction called the sequence of elimination graphs can be used to find a better permutation of the matrix. However, the formal theory depends upon a "No-Cancellation Assumption". When this assumption fails, the structure of the elimination graph is compromised. We show that there are restrictions on the number of these exact cancellations that can occur among the permutations of a given matrix.
