Many famous analysts worked with the real numbers quite differently than we do. Although the idea of infinitesimals was criticized by many and not quite rigorous, it facilitated much of the early development of calculus. With the development of modern set theory, Abraham Robinson was able to make rigorous the theory of the infinitesimal. Using his work, we will see how analysis can be done rigorously without epsilons and deltas.
