Abstract:

This talk will be a basic introduction to Solomon's descent algebra, a subalgebra of the group algebra for a finite Coxeter group. We will discuss its definition and some of its uses. We will look at the the example of Solomon's descent algebra for the Weyl group of type B2, and we will see that trying a similar construction in a slightly more general situation fails. We will also mention some analogs of the descent algebra.
